Het Singelpark is vanaf september 2025 het decor van het tweede driejaarlijks kunstproject van de Vrienden van het Singelpark.

De tentoonstelling, samengesteld door curator Annet Zondervan, omvat vijf spraakmakende kunstwerken in samenwerking met vier Leidse musea en de UB Bijzondere Collecties. Het zesde kunstproject is een community art project.

Sankofa is een begrip afkomstig uit Ghana. Het betekent letterlijk: "teruggaan en terug nemen". Het staat voor de noodzaak om kennis uit het verleden aandacht te geven en in het heden te gebruiken. Sankofa wordt gevisualiseerd met een vogel. Het ei in de afbeelding van Sankofa staat voor de kennis uit het verleden en symboliseert tegelijkertijd de toekomst. De vogel kijkt terug én beweegt met lopende poten, vooruit naar die toekomst.

Vier kunstenaars krijgen de opdracht om binnen het thema van het koloniale verleden van en in Leiden, voor het Singelpark een nieuw kunstwerk te maken. Naast de vier nieuwe kunstwerken zal een werk in bruikleen te zien zijn dat op de nieuwe locatie opnieuw betekenis krijgt. Daarnaast realiseert het Leidse Podium Sleutelwoord een Spoken Word project met brede participatie van de Leidse bevolking.

Kunstenaars Razia Barsatie, Fré Calmes, Chequita Nahar en Hatutamelen maken nieuw werk voor het park. Museum Naturalis, Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, Museum De Lakenhal en de Bijzondere Collecties van de Universitaire Bibliotheken Leiden hebben hun collecties opengesteld voor de kunstenaars. Collecties die ook, direct of indirect, verhalen in zich dragen van koloniaal verleden. Die collecties zijn de inspiratiebron voor de kunstenaars om dit historische verleden te vertalen naar nieuw werk en het zo bespreekbaar te maken. Daarmee maken ze als het ware een brug tussen verleden en heden terwijl de musea op hun beurt een brug slaan naar de openbare ruimte in de tad. Monika Dahlberg plaatst als vijfde i.s.m. het Wereldmuseum een beeld in bruikleen langs de Singelpark route. De kunstwerken zorgen er niet alleen voor dat je het park op een andere manier ervaart, maar ze voegen een eigen verhalende laag toe aan dit al markante park met zijn historische betekenis.

In augustus en september van dit jaar zal Podium Sleutelwoord met medewerking van de Leidse bevolking op locaties in de stad en het Singelpark een participatief Spoken Word * kunstproject realiseren. Podium Sleutelwoord is opgericht door Leidse dichters en auteurs. Het is een broedplaats voor lokaal talent. De persoonlijke beleving van de deelnemers staat tijdens dit community art project centraal. Wat betekent het koloniale verleden voor jou?

* Spoken Word is een manier om je uit te drukken en is verwant aan rap en poetry slam. Belangrijkste kenmerk is dat deze vorm van poëzie direct uit het hart is geschreven en is bedoeld om voor te dragen. Ritme, klank en rijm zijn belangrijk, de taal is kort en krachtig.

Waarom een tentoonstelling met dit thema?
Wat weten wij eigenlijk van het koloniale verleden van en in Leiden was de vraag die tentoonstellingsmaker Annet Zondervan zich stelde als curator voor het project. Heel weinig, bleek al snel. Het thema betekent aandacht voor elkaar, voor elkaars achtergrond en de geschiedenis van de stad. De historische betekenis van de stad met haar rijkdom aan museale collecties vormden voor Zondervan het logische vertrekpunt voor het project dat zij de resonerende naam Sankofa gaf. De kunstwerken in deze tweede tentoonstelling zijn ieder op hun eigen manier een eigentijdse bespiegeling op het koloniale verleden van en in Leiden. In haar dagelijkse werk is Annet directeur van de presentatie- en maakplek CBK Zuidoost in Amsterdam .

Kunst in het Singelpark, voor wie en waarom?
Het Singelpark is een initiatief van bewoners verenigd in de stichting Vrienden van het Singelpark en de gemeente. Zo’n park van grootstedelijke proportie biedt ruimte voor ontmoeting, natuurbeleving, sport en ontspanning. Kunst mag daarbij niet ontbreken, zo vinden de Vrienden. Kunst als versterking van de waarde van het park. Maar ook om verbindingen tot stand te brengen. Tussen mensen, met het park en met de verhalen die de stad vertelt. Het biedt de mogelijkheid om kunst in de openbare ruimte een podium in Leiden te geven.

Op 28 april wordt in Scheltema een avond georganiseerd voor omwonenden en andere geïnteresseerden waar het project wordt gepresenteerd en inbreng kan worden geleverd. De aankondiging ervan wordt begin april gepubliceerd.

Sankofa – a look at Leiden's colonial past
New three-year exhibition of Art in the Singelpark 2025-2028
From September 2025, the Singelpark will be the setting for the second three-year art project of the Friends of the Singelpark. The exhibition, curated by Annet Zondervan, includes five high-profile works of art in collaboration with four Leiden museums and the UB Special Collections. The sixth art project is a community art project.

Sankofa is a concept from Ghana. It literally means: "going back and taking back". It stands for the need to pay attention to knowledge from the past and to use it in the present. Sankofa is visualized with a bird. The egg in the image of Sankofa represents knowledge from the past and at the same time symbolizes the future. The bird looks back and moves forward with walking legs, towards that future.

Four artists are commissioned to create a new work of art for the Singelpark within the theme of the colonial past of and in Leiden. In addition to the four new works of art, a work on loan will be on display that will gain new meaning at the new location. In addition, the Leiden Podium Sleutelwoord is realizing a Spoken Word project with broad participation from the Leiden population.

Artists Razia Barsatie, Fré Calmes, Chequita Nahar and Hatutamelen are creating new work for the park. Museum Naturalis, Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, Museum De Lakenhal and the Special Collections of Leiden University Libraries have opened their collections to the artists. Collections that also, directly or indirectly, contain stories from the colonial past. These collections are the source of inspiration for the artists to translate this historical past into new work and thus make it discussable. In doing so, they create a bridge between the past and the present, as it were, while the museums in turn create a bridge to the public space in the city. Monika Dahlberg is the fifth to place a sculpture on loan along the Singelpark route in collaboration with the Wereldmuseum. The artworks not only ensure that you experience the park in a different way, they also add their own narrative layer to this already striking park with its historical significance.

In August and September of this year, Podium Sleutelwoord will realize a participatory Spoken Word * art project at locations in the city and the Singelpark with the cooperation of the Leiden population. Podium Sleutelwoord was founded by Leiden poets and authors. It is a breeding ground for local talent. The personal experience of the participants is central during this community art project. What does the colonial past mean to you?

* Spoken Word is a way to express yourself and is related to rap and poetry slam. The most important characteristic is that this form of poetry is written directly from the heart and is intended to be recited. Rhythm, sound and rhyme are important, the language is short and powerful.

Why an exhibition with this theme?
What do we actually know about the colonial past of and in Leiden was the question that exhibition maker Annet Zondervan asked herself as curator for the project. Very little, it soon became apparent. The theme means attention for each other, for each other's background and the history of the city. The historical significance of the city with its wealth of museum collections formed the logical starting point for Zondervan for the project that she gave the resonant name Sankofa. The works of art in this second exhibition are each in their own way a contemporary reflection on the colonial past of and in Leiden. In her daily work, Annet is the director of the presentation and production space CBK Zuidoost in Amsterdam.

Art in the Singelpark, for whom and why?
The Singelpark is an initiative of residents united in the foundation Friends of the Singelpark and the municipality. Such a park of metropolitan proportions offers space for meeting, experiencing nature, sports and relaxation. Art should not be missing, according to the Friends. Art as a reinforcement of the value of the park. But also to create connections. Between people, with the park and with the stories that the city tells. It offers the opportunity to give art in the public space a platform in Leiden.

On April 28, an evening will be organized in Scheltema for local residents and other interested parties where the project will be presented and input can be provided. The announcement will be published in early April.
