Na uitgebreide studies in oed-uitvoering, compositie en musicologie, verdiepte Rohana zich in de ontwikkeling van hedendaagse oed-composities, waarbij hij zich liet inspireren door de praktijken van Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin en Brahms tot aan Tanburi Cemil Bey, Kemani Tatyus Efendi, Muhammad Al-Qasabji en Mohammed Abdel Wahab. In 2022 behaalde Rohana zijn Ph.D. in artistiek onderzoek aan de Academie voor Creatieve en Podiumkunsten van de Universiteit Leiden.
Rohana heeft een brede podiumervaring. De afgelopen vijftien jaar trad hij op in Japan, Marokko, Egypte, Turkije, de VS en Europa. Tijdens KodV 2024 presenteert hij zijn nieuwe album "Safa" (Puurheid). Het album, gecomponeerd voor solo oed-optredens, nodigt het publiek uit om verbinding te maken met het instrument op een pure en intieme manier. De muziek, gecreëerd tussen Palestina en Nederland, is geïnspireerd op een verscheidenheid aan thema's, waaronder persoonlijke ervaringen, plaatsen in de Levant, helemaal tot aan de wereld van Maqam (het modale systeem van Arabische muziek).
Nizar Rohana presents his new album
Just like in 2022, Palestinian ud player Nizar Rohana will also be present again at KodV. He has developed a unique voice in the ud world. He is distinguished for combining virtuosity within fresh contemporary compositions while maintaining the oud’s authentic language.
Following extensive studies in ud performance, composition, and musicology, Rohana immersed himself in developing contemporary ud compositions, taking inspiration from the practices of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Brahms all the way to Tanburi Cemil Bey, Kemani Tatyus Efendi, Muhammad Al-Qasabji and Muhammad Abdel Wahab. In 2022, Rohana received his Ph.D. in artistic research at Leiden University Academy for Creative and Performing Arts.
As a performer, Rohana has a wide stage experience. During the last fifteen years, he performed in countries such as Japan, Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, and in the USA and Europe. In this concert he will present his new album "Safa" (Purity). The album, composed for solo ud performance, invites the audience to connect with the instrument in a pure and intimate manner. Created between Palestine and the Netherlands, the music draws inspiration from a variety of themes, including personal experiences, places in the Levant, all the way to the world of Maqam (the Arabic music modal system).
